Until the arrival of the Indian rhinoceros Clara in Holland in 1741, the species was unfamiliar and almost mythical to Europeans. Clara's imposing physical presence and exceptionally docile nature attracted thousands of curious on-lookers, including naturalists and artists. Charissa Bremer-David, associate curator of sculpture and decorative arts, the J. Paul Getty Museum, explores how the fascination for this living wonder stimulated both intense scientific interest and a popular frenzy for images, commemorative objects, and memorabilia. Complements the exhibition Oudry's Painted Menagerie.
