The Summer of ‘69: Dreams Dying and Dreams Coming to Birth
Presented by Professor Fred Nielson at The Durham Museum
Saturday, June 25 at 1PM
By the summer of 1969, the most tumultuous decade in recent American history was drawing to a close, with a mixture of endings and new beginnings: the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, the Chappaquiddick incident, the recording of the Beatles’ final album, the Manson murders, the Woodstock festival, the Stonewall riots, the moon landing, and more. The last summer of the Sixties is a window into the entire decade, what it accomplished and what it failed to accomplish, and how a nation that seemed to be coming apart was able, in the end, to stay together.
Fred Nielson is a professor of history at the University of Nebraska Omaha. His primary areas of emphasis are 19th and 20th century American cultural and environmental history. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. Please call (402) 444-5071 or email reservations@durhammuseum.org.
