The Summer of ‘69: Dreams Dying and Dreams Coming to Birth

By the summer of 1969, the most tumultuous decade in recent American history was drawing to a close, with a mixture of endings and new beginnings: the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, the Chappaquiddick incident, the recording of the Beatles’ final album, the Manson murders, the Woodstock festival, the Stonewall riots, the moon landing, and more. The last summer of the Sixties is a window into the entire decade, what it accomplished and what it failed to accomplish, and how a nation that seemed to be coming apart was able, in the end, to stay together.
