The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex and the Civil War May 12, 2010

Our forum speaker, Dr. Thomas Lowry has authored more that eleven books on the Civil War. His very first book was titled "The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex and the Civil War." First published in 1994, it continues to garner attention and curiosity to the present day. As Dr. Lowry says, "this is the subject most people are interested in". After a 40 year medical career, Dr. Lowry retired in 1997 to study and write history full time. Our ancestors tidied up their history after the Civil War and recent research shows there was far more public sex and venereal disease than today. Wild and often humorous, these stories give a whole new flavor to the history of the war. He even includes locations of the houses in Washington where the ladies of the night plied their trade.
