This world premiere, a Strathmore original production, tells the heroic story of Washington, D.C.’s “Colored American Opera Company,” the first African-American opera troupe in the United States, who set out to raise funds for a new church (St. Augustine) by producing and touring the operetta, The Doctor of Alcantara. Blending historical narrative and song, the concert ends with a concert performance of the operetta. Don’t miss this powerful performance that showcases a long-lost Washington cultural treasure!
