The Spitzer Space Telescope August 5, 2012

During the last 75 years, in a continuing quest to gather information about the universe of which humanity is a part, astronomers have devised and deployed an expanding array of telescopes sensitive to parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes cannot see. One of these is the Spitzer Space Telescope, which has spent almost 9 years surveying the cosmos from deep space. Sensitive to infra-red radiation, it has expanded our understanding of stellar dynamics and galactic structure, and has provided tantalizing glimpses into the earliest years of the universe.
