Greek Philosopher Diogenes of Sinope (412BC - 323 BC) father of Cynicism, preached the virtue of self-sufficiency, a life which was natural and not dependent upon the luxuries of civilization. His life was a relentless campaign to debunk the social values and institutions of materialism. Tonight's speaker takes inspiration from Diogenes and considers this ancient pagan philosopher's message for today. Economic and environmental crises redirect us back to practical aspects of our connection with the Earth. What does it mean to live a satisfied life? This evening is all about the practicalities of this pagan's teaching, and the speaker suggests that Diogenes' ideas can lead towards a much needed shift in attitudes and expectations. This is a talk for everyone who loves and cares about the earth, and who has an interest in ancient pagan philosophers' teachings for today.
