The Spirit of Brazil 2012 October 18, 2012

ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco (ACSF), the Bay Area's first non-profit organization dedicated to recovering, preserving, and promoting Afro-Brazilian culture, presents the Spirit of Brazil, October 18-21, at the ODC Theater in San Francisco. Under the theme “Mar de Tradições” (Sea of Traditions), the event includes performances from members of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco’s renowned performance troupe, in addition to visiting capoeiristas, Professores Mobília and Goma and music by master percussionist Gamo da Paz and his group Quimbanda, joined by musician Alfie Macias and choreographer/dancer Raffaella Falchi and SAMBAXÉ Dance.

For the sixth time, The Spirit of Brazil brings to San Francisco the movement and music of South America’s largest country, this year showcasing the traditional Brazilian arts of Capoeira and Maculelê, folk dance and musical forms linked in their origin of creation by slaves on plantations in Brazil. The performances explore the evolution of Capoeira and Maculelê, from the post-slavery era to modern-day Brazil, and trace their movement from the northeastern state of Bahia to cosmopolitan Rio de Janeiro.
