The Sleeping Beauty is an enchanting classic ballet choreographed by Russian ballerina Galina Samsova after Marius Petipa, who worked closely with composer Peter Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky was so enamored by the story, he composed the ballet in about 40 days. As he wrote to his benefactress, Mme. von Meck, "The subject is so poetic, so inspirational to composition, that I am captivated by it."

When it was finished in 1889, Tchaikovsky received 3,000 rubles and a bonus of 2,000 more for having created such an excellent score. In November of 1892, dancers marked the 50th performance of The Sleeping Beauty by presenting Tchaikovsky a crown onstage at the Maryinski Theatre.

Samsova's staging of The Sleeping Beauty was premiered in Oklahoma by Tulsa Ballet during the 2000-01 season to rave reviews.
