WORLD-RENOWNED SILVERSMITH STUDIO’S WORK ON VIEW AT THE ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF SAN FRANCISCO
The Silver Treasures of San Lorenzo is a traveling exhibition that comprises more than one hundred objects borrowing from the historic collections owned by acclaimed Italian architects and designers.
The Silver Treasures of San Lorenzo will be shown at five different Italian Cultural Institutes in North America, and after its first stop in Los Angeles (March 12 – July 2, 2009), it will be on view at the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco from July 9 to August 28, 2009.
Viewers will admire a varied range of objects such as bowls, candelabra, furniture, vases, trays, piggy-banks, and the exquisite jewelry designed by twelve female architects and designers, including Patricia Urquiola, Terry Dwan, Terri Pecora, Matali Crasset, Lella Vignelli, Scarpa and Giovanna Talocci.
Other highlights include cooking utensils and the unusual putter designed by Tobia Scarpa, who will be a special guest at the Institute in October 2009.
For almost 40 years, the Milanese firm San Lorenzo, established in 1970 by Ciro Cacchione with the mission of introducing industrial design practices to the world of silversmithing, has been a leader in this field.
Since its foundation, the San Lorenzo Studio has applied a variety of silver-working techniques, joining ancient traditions with modern design. San Lorenzo is the only silversmith in the world to produce objects for practical use in pure silver (999/000).
Many of the studio’s creations are exhibited in leading museums throughout the world, such as MoMA, the Metropolitan, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, where San Lorenzo was featured in a solo exhibition in 1995-96 showcasing over 150 objects. Most recently San Lorenzo silverware was exhibited at the Milan Triennale in 2003.
