The Shot Heard Round the World
Ralph Branca, starting pitcher for the Brookyn Dodgers (1944-53 and 1956), will join Joshua Prager, author of The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and the Shot Heard Round the World (Pantheon, 2006), to discuss his pitch and Thomson’s famous home run, which catapulted the Giants to the 1951 National League pennant. Prager’s research demonstrates that throughout the extraordinary come-from-behind season, the Giants had been stealing the Dodgers’ signs through a telescope hidden in the Polo Grounds clubhouse. Made possible with the support of Larry Simon and presented in conjunction with The Glory Days: New York Baseball 1947-1957. $
