The Glide Legacy Committee to Host
The Second Annual Glide Legacy Gala - A Love Supreme
Saturday, July 9 at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom
Don your tux or favorite party gown and join the GLIDE Legacy Committee for their second annual GLIDE Legacy Gala – A Love Supreme at the San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom on Saturday, July 9. The black-tie affair dedicated to celebrating and continuing GLIDE’s incredible legacy of love, leadership and community will feature the inspirational GLIDE Ensemble and Change Band, famed jazz ensemble the Terence Brewer Band and DJ KingMost with a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres from some of San Francisco’s finest restaurants.
Along with the evening’s festivities, the GLIDE Legacy Committee -- a group of young social entrepreneurs -- will present the Cecil Williams Award and Janice Mirikitani Award to two individuals who are change agents in their communities. This year’s Cecil Williams Award goes to California Attorney General Kamala Harris. The Janice Mirikitani Award will go to Dave Eggers for his groundbreaking work as an author, publisher, philanthropist and literary entrepreneur. Both recipients will not be in attendance due to scheduling conflicts.
“We are thrilled to present these awards to Attorney General Harris and Eggers,” said Mike Kim, chairman of the GLIDE Legacy Committee. “Harris’ leadership on behalf of victims of violence in our communities represents the authentic power and courage to build a safe and just society while Eggers serves as an inspiration for our generation as a change agent whose commitment to students and teachers is tireless and total.”
The GLIDE Legacy Gala will raise funds for programs of the GLIDE Foundation so it can continue to provide innovative and comprehensive services to the poor and marginalized in the San Francisco community.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to the GLIDE Legacy Committee,” said GLIDE founder Reverend Cecil Williams. It is encouraging to see young folks get involved in philanthropy and really make a difference in the world."
Tickets range in price from $65 for general admission to $150 for VIP tickets and are available at Glide.org. About Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani:
In 1963, Reverend Cecil Williams revolutionized the then Conservative GLIDE Memorial United Methodist Church by encouraging policies and practices that focused on accepting people from all walks of life in order to create positive change in the community. Over the last 43 years, Williams and his wife Janice Mirikitani, the Founding President of GLIDE, have achieved worldwide recognition for their groundbreaking work toward empowering the city’s poor and marginalized communities to make meaningful changes in their lives and break the cycle of poverty and dependence. Mirikitani is San Francisco’s second Poet Laureate, appointed in 2000. She has authored four books of poetry and the editor of nine landmark anthologies, which provide platforms for writers of color, women, youth and children.
