The Scott Kirby Band
4pm to 7pm – No Cover
Scott Kirby spent most of the eighties working as a political consultant in his native state of New Hampshire, as well as playing a few solo gigs on the weekends. In 1988, he left his job, packed his guitar, cashed in his last three paychecks and headed for the Florida Keys, to take a break from the real world and New England's bitter winters. After living in Key West for 15 years, Scott finds himself splitting his time between New Hampshire, Key West and the road, where he has actively been promoting his newest release, 4 Good Dogs.
A fingerstyle guitarist and singer/songwriter, Kirby's musical style weaves from pop, to acoustic rock, to what he refers to as "beach folk." His lyrics are often storytelling in nature, much in the vein of Steve Goodman or Jerry Jeff Walker, and reflect the humor of someone who fled traditional New England for the laid back and zany lifestyle of America's southernmost island town. A reviewer from The Musician's Trade Journal writes, "Kirby's a storyteller. Sometimes sentimental, sometimes hilarious, but all with insight, depth and wisdom … you can't help but like this guy's music." Frank Quatrone, of Ticket Magazine, writes, "His writing can be engagingly literate to elegantly simple … the whole place was laughing and singing along to his sometimes outrageous lyrics."
When back in Key West, Scott occasionally performs at The Hog's Breath Saloon, The Pier House, and occasionally at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Café. He has also been a regular participant in The Key West Songwriters' Festival, where he has shared the stage with some of America's finest songwriters, such as, Mac McAnally, Keith Sykes, Gretchen Peters, Chuck Gannon, Pat Alger, Chuck Jones and Stephanie Smith, to name a few.
Scott was a recent finalist in the South Florida Folk Festival songwriting competition and the lyrics from one of his songs was featured by renowned author Marie Claire Blais, in her book entitled, Notes from North America, A Writer's Passage.
Jimmy Buffett's online radio station, Radio Margaritaville, has broadcast a number of the IslandFest shows live, in addition to including much of Scott's material in their regular programming.
Scott released his first CD of original music in 1993, entitled Too Damn Yankee, followed by his second recording, Grand Bar Schemes, in January 1997. Walkin on Thin Ice, was released on the Little Flock Music label, in October 1999, as well as Scott's 2003 release, 4 Good Dogs.
Over the years, Scott has collaborated with a number of songwriters, including Peter Mayer and Roger Guth, of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, and drummer/producer Russ Kunkel. He has also recently written with Hugo Duarte and guitarist Bobby Donaldson.
