Dedicated to the memory of festival founders Arnold and Muriel Rosen, and supported by the Rosens’ daughter, Nancy Schaffel, and her husband Neil, whose vision and generosity has made possible this annual competition.
After successfully debuting the Rosen-Schaffel Young Artist Competition in 2011, the festival, in partnership with the university’s Hayes School of Music, proudly presents the competition’s second exciting season, open to young, talented musicians from across North Carolina. Contestants compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to perform with renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz and the Eastern Festival Orchestra during the following season of An Appalachian Summer Festival.
Festival founders Arnold and Muriel Rosen believed strongly in providing opportunities for young musicians to develop their talent through education and public performance. This belief, championed now by a new generation of the Rosen family, is a vital part of the festival’s mission and identity.
In the spring of 2012, contestants submitted recordings of their work and a panel of distinguished musicians selected eight finalists to compete in a public performance on Sunday, July 1. During this final round, jurors will choose three top prize-winners and the audience will select an “Audience Choice Award Winner.”
