Rocking the City from Kingstonto Kinshasa to NYC ... and Beyond
Ned Sublette
How do the musical traditions of Cuba and New Orleans influence our modern sounds? These two focal points of musical creativity have helped birth many of the most dynamic forms of popular music around the world for over a century, from jazz to reggae to soukous. New Orleans made major contributions to shaping ska, rock-steady and modern Jamaican reggae. Cuban influences revolutionized African, Latin and our own American dance music.
This evening, join the legendary Ned Sublette for a mix of music, dance, anecdote and humorous but profound cultural history, as we explore (and hear!) how the sounds of Cuba and New Orleans continue to influence our political, religious and musical character.
