The role of open source -- particularly infrastructure, platforms and applications offered to commercial customers as services -- is fundamental. It's reasonable to assume that without the existence of open source operating systems (e.g. Linux), virtual machine environments (e.g. Xen), data base platforms (e.g. MySQL), the programming languages and frameworks on which many of today's offerings were constructed, our industry would not have recovered from the bubble burst of 10 years ago, much less flourished as it has.
The panel of distinguished experts will reflect on the history of open source software and share their insights and perspectives on the mix of technology, culture, licensing and commercial strategy that is Open Source Software. We will discuss what changes are likely to appear in our industry, how the formula for commercial success in Open Source will change, and whether there exists opportunity for newly established companies that are built on the basis of commercialized Open Source.
