Synopsis:
Brad & Janet are two sexually confused middle class American kids who seek aide after having tire trouble on the way to visit an old college professor. They find help at Frankenstein Manor where they are confronted by the mad ‘doctor’ Frank N. Furter from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania. With the doctor’s decedent morality, his servants Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia he has created an experiment, the perfect man christened Rocky Horror. Adrift in this world of science fiction, one never knows what to expect. The Rocky Horror Show is an outrageous classic of stereotyped science fiction movies, Marvel comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings, and rock ‘n’ roll of every vintage.

History:
The Rocky Horror Show is a play, written in six months by Richard O'Brien. The first preview was on June 16, 1973, at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in London, England. After a short while, it was moved from the 60-seat Upstairs theatre to the Classic Cinema, a converted movie house with 270 seats, and then to the King's Road Theatre, which seats 500. It was named Best New Musical of 1973 by "Plays and Players"' annual poll of theater critics, and best musical of 1973 by the "Evening Standard’s” panel of drama critics. One of the most dynamic and creative forces of the American music industry, Lou Adler, who was in London, saw The Rocky Horror Show and promptly sewed up the American theatrical rights to the play. In the short span of nine months, Adler opens his production of The Rocky Horror Show in his Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles on March 24, 1974.

UNT’s production of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show is guest-directed by Bob Hess. Both onstage and on camera, he has worked extensively as both an actor and director in the Metroplex for the past 28 years, appearing and/or directing on the stages of Contemporary Theatre of Dallas (where he last staged Rocky Horror Show), Lyric Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Dallas Children’s Theater, WaterTower Theatre, Kitchen Dog Theatre, Uptown Players, Casa Manana, Theatre Three, Echo Theatre, Stage West, Second Thought Theatre, Theatre Arlington, and Granbury Opera House.

This production was designed by students and UNT faculty and staff: Rosana Avina (Scenic Design – student), Barbara C, Cox (Costume Design – faculty), Suzanne Shockley (Costume Design – staff), Kenneth Farnsworth (Lighting Design – student), Brooks Willhoite (Sound Design – student), Josh Baker (Properties Design – student), Katarina Kosmopoulos (Makeup Design – student).

Audience participation is welcomed for this particular production. The Department of Dance and Theatre’s student organization University Players will be selling “prop bags” for the audience to purchase at $3 per bag or two bags for $5. These bags will be filled with items such as newspapers, noisemakers, and playing cards all of which the audience members can use during the production. The audience members are encouraged to come in costume, or to dance, sing, and shout out in the typical Rocky Horror fashion.
