Richard Brinsley Sheridan's 'The Rivals' is a comedy of bad "manners" that finds would-be lovers complicating their own lives and relationships to bring to reality their deepest romantic and sexual fantasies. As each character pursues the realization of their fantasy they get more ensnared in the web of their desires, entrapping others and resulting in an orgy of misdirection, confusion and drawn swords.
