From discrimination based on sexual orientation to debates about same-sex marriage, gay rights continue to be a topic at the forefront of the nation’s dialogue. To reflect on the current state of human rights, the Right Reverend Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay Bishop, will take part in an “Enter the Conversation” discussion with the Very Reverend Dr. James A. Kowalski, Dean of the Cathedral, on Monday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan.
Bishop Robinson, a tireless worker for civil rights, has helped shaped the discourse around gay marriage, the de-stigmatization of transgendered people in church life and ministry, and the need for the freedom to love to be recognized as a basic human right.
Bishop Robinson was the religious leader chosen to give the invocation at President Obama’s inaugural ceremonies and is the subject of the 2012 documentary Love Free or Die by Macky Alston and Sandy Itkoff, which will be screened at the Cathedral at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 17 in Cathedral House, and all day in the Cathedral’s Sports Bay. He is also the author of the forthcoming book, God Believes in Love: Straight Talk about Gay Marriage (Knopf, 2012).
“Enter the Conversation” is an ongoing series at the Cathedral that convenes conversations with world leaders and top thinkers, journalists, activists, and religious leaders focused on the most pressing, topical issues of our times to empower individuals to be agents of positive social change.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.
