Author Jeff Conant presents his new book, A Poetics of Resistance (AK Press, 2010), which explores the means, meanings, and mythos behind the Zapatista image. The first "postmodern revolution" presented itself to the world through a complex web of propaganda in every available medium: the colorful communiqués of Subcomandante Marcos, the ski masks, uniforms, dolls, mura...ls, songs, and weapons both symbolic and real. Conant breaks down the strategies employed by the Zapatistas in building their public image, drawing out useful lessons for social movements around the globe.
