Tattered Cover Film Series 2008
January 5: The Red Shoes (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, 1948, 133 minutes)
While The Red Shoes has somehow become THE ballet film for young American girls, the film is also one of the great expressions of the danger and obsession that lie with the quest for artistic perfection. Moira Shearer plays the dancer who falls under the sway of Anton Walbrookâs impresario. Powell and Pressburger are among the greatest filmmakers so far, and no one has yet matched their understanding of color.
