The West Australian Ballet, Australia’s first ballet company, is delighted to present this magnificent and romantic two-act ballet to the Eastern States for the first time. Playing exclusively at Riverside Theatres from Wednesday 26 November for three performances only, THE RED SHOES is a beautiful stage interpretation of the 1948 movie, one of the greatest dance stories of our time.
THE RED SHOES tells the tale of Boris Lermontov, an obsessive Ballet Director, and Victoria Page, a gifted young ballerina. Cast as the lead in Lermontov’s new masterpiece The Red Shoes, Victoria falls in love with the ballet’s composer, Julian Craster, and finds herself faced with the ultimate decision between love and ambition.
The ballet director becomes infatuated with the dancer and is fanatical in his ambition for her to succeed – ambition she shares. When she falls in love with the charismatic composer, a jealous triangle unfolds leaving the ballerina faced with the impossible task of choosing between her two great loves.
“West Australians Ballet’s wonderful dancers have truly embraced the complexities of roles originally created for the likes of Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann and Leonide Massine,” said choreographer Simon Dow. “Each scene brings a new display of technical skill and visual splendour.”
Complementing Dow’s ballet to perfection are magnificent costumes and sets designed by Leon Krasenstein and lighting by award winning designer Joseph Mercurio.
The Ballet’s score includes excerpts from Prokofiev’s The Stone Flower and Chout.
Former Artistic Director of the West Australian Ballet, Simon Dow is now making his mark as an independent choreographer. Simon was the first male dancer to win the Australian Cecchetti Junior Medal. He trained at the Australian Ballet School and has danced with the Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and the Washington Ballet. He was associate director of the Washington Ballet for two seasons. His work includes A Streetcar Named Desire for the West Australian Ballet and a full length work for the Shanghai Ballet.
“Dow should be congratulated for this outstanding production; the choreography, design, dramatic structure and performance combines to produce a richly satisfying piece that deserves to become a classic in its own right”. –The West Australian
