Few other contemporary artists so fully embody YBCA’s Big Idea of Encounter more than Karen Finley. Her performance work—celebrated for exploding taboos around sex, gender, and celebrity while suffering (earning?) right-wing censure—invites the viewer to plumb the depths of satire and socio-political tragicomedy. Her oeuvre transcends the insular, echo-y art world with explosive and cathartic forays into club culture, pop music, and publishing—most recently with the release of her newest book, The Reality Shows.
