Marion Carnegie Library is offering a new program, “Read the Movie, Watch the Book.” Each month the library chooses a new book and film combination. Participation is open to all community members, who may participate by reading the book, watching the movie or doing both.
The Other Boleyn Girl is the next selection. Participants are encouraged to read the novel by Phillipa Gregory and then view the movie version on Monday, November 24 at 5 p.m. in the McCoskey Room, the library’s lower level multi-purpose room. Discussion time will be available after the movie.
The 2008 film, starring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana, tells the story of royal mistresses Anne and Mary Boleyn, sisters who compete for the favor of King Henry VIII. During this period of English history (1530s), Henry’s single-minded desire for a male heir leads him to break with the Catholic Church and form the Church of England. Without the pope to stop him, Henry divorces his first wife to marry Anne in the hope of having a son.
“Read the Movie, Watch the Book” will take a break for the December holidays. The program will be back in January, so watch for the next selection announcement.
