The North-West Passage: An Artic Obsession May 22, 2009

For centuries explorers searched for the North-West Passage, a treacherous Arctic sea route, as a short-cut for European traders to reach the Far East. The North-West Passage: An Arctic Obsession, reveals some of the extraordinary stories, feats of endurance and tragedies of British expeditions in the Canadian Arctic.

Highlights include the flagstaff used by Sir James Clark Ross to mark his discovery of the first North Magnetic Pole, and relics discovered on some of the search expeditions for Sir John Franklin's doomed voyage in 1845. The exhibition also considers the Canadian Arctic as home to the Inuit and reveals why the Arctic is making headlines today.
