In THE NOD: Tony dealt with the hardships life threw at him with a simple accepting nod. A nod that said "everything's gonna be alright." Even if it wasn't or wouldn't be. Nodding was his way of coping -- coping with the kinds of fears universally shared. As a kid, the nod was a strategy to deal with his ‘crazy mama's’ seductive ways. As a grownup, he nodded to bluff his way in and out of lucrative writing gigs; nodded, as he would veer towards then away from the not quite available woman he loved. Over and over with self-effacing candor and deceit, he pretended to hold it all together, even as he felt it slipping from his grasp. Consumed by mortifying panic, suffocating breathe, and an epic aversion to the feelings he most feared and desired -- intolerable life affirming feelings like joy, serenity, fulfillment -- Tony started springing leaks not even Hans Brinker could plug. With little or no help from family or friends, doctors or shamans, therapists or gurus, he squandered his Hollywood wealth -- emptied his pockets, shelved his career. What happened then? He stumbled upon personal fortune. And now Tony sifts thru, picks up, and rearranges the pieces in this hilariously painful solo-performance at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
