In commemoration of the Jamestown 2007 America's 400th Anniversary celebration, this juried exhibition by Tidewater Art Alliance member artists features works inspired by the theme, 'The New World.' Works in all media exploring this theme, whether historical based or interpreting exploration and discovery will be featured. Cash awards totaling $850 will be presented by the juror. Dan Smith, artist and Hampton Roads resident between 1995 and 2003, returns to the region to mount a mixed media exhibition. This installation will reinterpret sites visited by Captain John Smith during the Elizabethan adventurer's early explorations of Hampton Roads between the years 1607 and 1609. Using John Smith's narratives, the artist canoed many of the same routes and visited sites of the early explorer's Chesapeake Bay travels. The results are a satirical photo-based presentation of art combining natural and manmade objects.
