It has been said that all photographs have a narrative inherent in them. They suggest a frozen moment in time, or a representation of expanded time, a story or memory that existed or was constructed. Utilizing the clues we have in an image we try to detect a 'story', imagining the moments before and after the image was created. In this workshop we will explore the narrative quality of the photograph evoked through individual images, sequences, series and photo essays as well as the use of text with the photographic image. Self-surveillance and virtual identities will also be explored.
Photographers utilize photography, text, and/or computer/web media to relate a narrative. We will discuss the narrative impact of photographs to tell a story either as a single image or as a series as well as how a narrative is constructed and developed from one image to the next both as a group of related pictures and as a linear story. Students will work with digital imagery on a single project to construct a cohesive visual narrative with photographs, text and/or web-based imagery based on music, film, and literature, construct stories or virtual identities.
