An original musical about Kosovo, “You Took Away My Flag” is a classic story of young lovers separated by cultural divides – war and ethnicity: Vjosa and Dragan are in love, but she is an Albanian and he is a Serb.

The author, Henry H. Perritt spent a decade aiding the country’s redevelopment and drew on real stories for this musical.

Perritt spent 10 years in the nation, helping rebuild Kosovo after its violent ethnic conflict in the 1990s. The experience motivated him to write two books about the conflict, one a way forward for the war-torn nation, the other an inside look at the heroic and clandestine Kosovo Liberation Army.

He has taken the human drama from hundreds of interviews he conducted with Kosovars and Serbs and turned them into a classical musical theater story of a man and a woman whose love is challenged by war and ethnicity.

The show debuts June 12 at Strawdog Theatre in Chicago.

For every ticket sold, $1 will be donated to a scholarship fund established to help Kosovo students obtain a college education.
