Griffin Theatre Company and Riverside Productions proudly present Damien Millar’s THE MODERN INTERNATIONAL DEAD at Riverside Theatres from Tuesday 14 October for six performances only, following its season at the SBW Stables Theatre.

Against a backdrop of miraculous visions and terrible repercussions in Rwanda, secret facilities in Iraq, landmines in Cambodia and political cleansing in East Timor comes the extraordinary stories of some unique Australians setting out to bring relief and assistance to a troubled world.

Every year, a tiny group of unique individuals give up a regular lifestyle to begin an extraordinary undertaking. Banding together, they are recruited to bring relief to the world’s trouble spots. Delivering humanitarian or medical aid, they offer hope to those living on the edge of human tolerance – well, at least, that’s what they signed up for.

But when politics impedes progress and reality shatters aspiration, the only consistency is compromise. So what keeps these individuals coming back? Told with humour and courage, this enthralling kaleidoscope of personal stories features a stellar cast including Belinda McClory (Holy Day), Ian Meadows and Colin Moody (The Season at Sarsaparilla).

Revealing personal stories with a compassionate eye and a gallows humour, Damien Millar offers a compelling, practical perspective on international aid in this World Premiere of a new Australian verbatim theatre play. With THE MODERN INTERNATIONAL DEAD, Millar and director Chris Mead (Imago) have tackled the intentions, adversities and fears of Australians on the front line, building on the traditions of verbatim theatre and personal testimony such as My Name is Rachel Corrie and Paul Brown’s Aftershocks.
