The Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society is celebrating its 24th season by presenting one of the best loved Gilbert and Sullivan productions, The Mikado, or The Town of Titipu. Originally staged at the Savoy Theatre in London in 1885, it ran for 672 performances. Today, The Mikado remains the most often performed G&S operetta.
Although set in Japan, The Mikado was written as a thinly disguised satire of Victorian England. Sir W.S. Gilbert?s caustic humour and Sir Arthur Sullivan?s melodic talents are showcased in songs such as ?A Wandering Minstrel I?, ?I?ve Got a Little List?, ?Three Little Maids from School?, ?A More Humane Mikado?, and ?Willow, Tit-Willow?.
The Surrey Arts Centre Studio Theatre (88th Avenue and King George Highway) will be transformed into the Town of Titipu, Japan from May 17 to 28. Evening performances are Wednesday to Saturday at 8:00 pm, with matinees May 21, 27 and 28 at 3:00 pm.
In both of the past two years the popular spring G&S productions have sold out, so order your tickets early! The Surrey Arts Centre Box Office is open Monday to Sunday from 12 to 5 pm and Thursday until 7 pm. Tickets for The Mikado may be purchased in person, online at https://secure1.city.surrey.bc.ca/cgi-bin/tm.cgi, or by phone at 604-501-5566.
