The audience overflowed last year with mesmerized children sitting on the floor and standing room only for adults. The successful staged reading of Out of the Apple Orchard took place last September at AISH NY, a popular Jewish outreach center. This year the program includes additional fun-filled events for the entire family - a staged reading of the play, a wonderful Chinese Auction, a High Holiday arts and crafts project, refreshments and nosh and a goody bag for the children!

Our High Holiday Family benefit is September 9th to raise funds in order to produce an annual production of Out of the Apple Orchard by Ellen W. Kaplan based on the children’s book by Yvonne David. Out of the Apple Orchard is a lovely High Holiday story about family and forgiveness and is a perfect opportunity for the Jewish community to come together in preparation for the High Holidays.

The story follows a Jewish immigrant family who escape city life on the lower east side to the Catskill Mountains. It is described by Arbiter Press as, "filled with spirituality and spirit, humor and heart" and teaches the important lesson of “teshuva” which can be loosely translated from Hebrew as “repentance.” When mistakes are made, one must make amends.

Kaplan’s 50 minute stage adaptation, targeted for young audience members grades two through six, has transformed this heartwarming book into a poignant and meaningful presentation for the stage through theatrical techniques that are engaging, exciting and energetic for both children and adults.

Out of the Apple Orchard is the perfect play to fulfill the Mesaper Theatre’s mission of “sharing aspects of Jewish heritage, values and texts through creative and theatrical expression.” The Mesaper Theatre perceives this project as a conduit in which all Jews are able to come together in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Mesaper Theatre’s goal is to produce an annual production of Out of the Apple Orchard to tour schools, community centers and synagogues in time for the High Holiday season next year.

Please join us for an afternoon of family fun, entertainment and the chance to participate in an annual event that will start your New Year with sweetness, spirit and celebration.
