Following Bell Shakespeare's critically acclaimed productions of The Servant of Two Masters (2004) and The War of the Roses (2005), Bell Shakespeare returns to Perth with a new production of The Merchant of Venice.
Always a topical play for reinterpretation, The Merchant of Venice combines fairy tale romance with hard-edged themes such as justice and mercy, racism and tolerance. The play's rich narrative tapestry also contains an array of eccentric and engaging characters, including: a handsome young man searching for a wealthy wife; a melancholy, rich merchant in love with the young man; three women who dress themselves as men and, most famously of all, a notorious villain named Shylock.
