One of the few Ealing comedies set outside of London, The Magnet follows precocious Liverpool schoolboy Johnny Brent (James Fox), who despite suffering from scarlet fever manages to con a younger boy out of a powerful magnet - a deal he brokers by offering the child an ivisible watch. A series of increasingly elaborate misunderstandings leads to Johnny becoming a local hero, but he's consumed with guilt over the sly way he acquired the magnet. Shot on location in Liverpool and New Brighton, the film is a wonderful snap shot of post-War Liverpool featuring scenes of New Brighton Pier and Lido, The Mersey Ferries and The Liverpool Overhead Railway.
