Registration is open for children ages 9 - 12 to participate in a literacy lift for youth! The Magic Pencil Experience, is a special program in which youth will read the novel along with its author, Karen E. Dabney, to upgrade and supplement their literacy skills. The focus is on reading, comprehension and motivation of readers.
There will be three 6 - 8 week sessions with all participants producing a theatrical community event in June 2011. The first 5 registrants will receive a free copy of the novel.
Scholarships are available. Registration for the first session ends October 31.

Literacy Lift for Youth
Karen E. Dabney, author, artist and native Detroiter, has worked extensively with youth in many capacities. The Magic Pencil is her first published novel with them in mind. It is unique in that the narrator, young Malcolm, explains switching between standard English and black language ("Ebonics"),demonstrating his ability to do so depending on the situation at hand. He is entertaining and articulate while using either manner of speech.
