The Magic Drum is a family entertainer as well as a play for children. It will reach the general public in evening shows, and school children in specially arranged morning shows. It is an original adaptation for the stage by BLT undertaken for SPOT 2008, culminating in the partnership production. The folk tales in Sudha Murty's book are drawn from many lands. A total of fifteen stories from the book have been adapted for the stage by BLT. The performance at any show will be a set of nine stories – chosen by the audience itself at the start of the show through a ‘lucky dip’. The stories have undercurrents of serious intent, but are all told with generous doses of fun, gaiety and even audience participation.
The Magic Drum is about truth prevailing in the end over crime, in spite of adversities, helped along by a wise minister.

The Seed of Truth is about a little boy who perseveres in a task honestly, rather than slipping into a dishonest short cut.

The Lasy Laddoo is about a miserly couple who cannot decide what to do with a third laddoo after they have had one each.

The Horse in the Burrow is about the gullibility of even the meanest of men when it comes to greed, always wanting more by cheating.

Two Thieves, as the title suggests, is a tale of two men with special talents in thieving, but turning over a new leaf and even fighting an injustice in the process.

The Cunning Fruit is about a boy in the North bitten by the wanderlust bug and his adventures with the jack fruit in the South.

The Bag of Words is about young love, and the futility of even the wrath of a king and queen in stopping their daughter finding her own match.

Nine Questions is about another princess in another quest, looking for a man who can match her in intelligence and learning.

Good Luck Gopal is about a simple man with a simple life sucked into a success and fame and becoming a victim of his good luck.

Magic in the Air is about the art of fighting petty criminals with a dash of their own medicine.

The White Crow is about the addiction of gossip, and the cleverness of a husband in putting the wife's gossiping to good use.

The Expensive Coconut is yet another way of showing that to save a penny we can sometimes end up spending a fortune.

The Emperor of Alkavati is about a compulsive con man who is also a dreamer, and his being brought down to the ground by a clever king.
