Paul Gibson’s Suite: Alice Through a Looking-Glass was commissioned in 2001 by the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus as a part of its 15 year anniversary celebration. The composition is comprised of three movements based on Lewis Carroll’s: “The Walrus and the Carpenter”, “Beneath a Sunny Sky” and Jabberwocky.” Following its premiere at the LACC, movements from Suite: Alice Through a Looking-Glass were included in the Oscar-nominated documentary Sing! The afternoon concludes with the well known Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D major K. 385, “Haffner” which premiered at the Vienna Burgtheater in 1783.
LACO is pleased to welcome back such a talented group of young musicians for the first time in over ten years. In addition to performing with LACO, the Chorus has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Los Angeles Children’s Chorus also assists the Los Angeles Opera by training children for productions that require young soloists, or a children’s chorus. The choristers have had many incredible opportunities including a world tour and most recently, the invitation to record on the upcoming Placido Domingo album, “Amore Infinito” to be released early 2009.
Preceding the performance, concert-goers are invited to join in on fun-filled interactive activities that relate to the repertoire. Children learn about light and reflection as they look into the mirror to create their own face painting masterpieces with Kidspace and make their own Kaleidoscopes to peer at the different shapes made by the mirrors inside. In addition to the activities based on the concert’s looking glass theme, guests will have the opportunity to learn about classical instruments in the instrument petting zoo where children of all ages can pluck, bow and blow on real instruments.
