Winner of the Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film, The Lives of Others is a superbly directed, engaging political thriller. Set in 1984 East Berlin five years before the fall of the Berlin wall, the story explores the ways in which a party loyalist’s point of view changes as the result of his surveillance of and immersion into the lives of a playwright and his actress girlfriend. The film uses authentic locations and events that gives the story an air of poignancy and the lead actors give terrific performances in this tightly wound human drama.
