Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2010-2011 Target FamilyFun series with Theatreworks USA’s long running production of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", based on the novel by C.S. Lewis, on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 2pm.
“Conveys the inspirational magic that has captivated young readers for decades.”
-- Lynn Heffley, The Los Angeles Times
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a musical adventure about four siblings evacuated to the English countryside during World War II. During a game of hide and seek in an old country house, they discover a magic wardrobe through which they enter the land of Narnia. This strange and wondrous place is ruled by the cold-hearted White Witch, who makes the winter last year round. The four children embark on a heroic and perilous quest to defeat the White Witch, fulfilling an ancient prophecy and returning the deposed King Aslan to his throne.
Theatreworks USA’s production is a condensed version of the full-length musical "Narnia", adapted by the authors into a 60-minute show. The longer work was performed in New York and London, receiving praise by critics and audiences alike. The New York Times said, “One is irresistibly drawn into the world of Narnia” and The Daily News called it “a deft musical adaptation... (that) captures the spirit of the book with great cleverness and charm.”
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" features a book by Jules Tasca, music by Thomas Tierney, and lyrics by Ted Drachman. It is based on the classic children’s book of the same name by C.S. Lewis, which is part of the seven-volume "Chronicles of Narnia" series. The production is directed by John Henry Davis with choreography by Janet Bogardus and fight direction by John Morgan. The scenery is designed by Beowulf Boritt and the costumes are by Anne-Marie Wright. Orchestrations are by Dave Hab.
"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" will be immediately followed by Brooklyn Center’s fourth annual "National Grid Earth Day Celebration", a free community festival. Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts’ 2010-2011 Target FamilyFun Series will conclude with American Family Theater’s production of "Beauty and the Beast" on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2pm. All Target FamilyFun series tickets are $6 in advance, $7 at the door.
