The second half of Wagners epic tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen tells the story of the life and death of the hero Siegfried. In this course, we will examine the Nordic and Teutonic source material often incomplete and contradictory from which Wagner constructed his narrative, and unravel the complex system of musical leitmotifs with which he wove a subtext to that narrative. This course covers the music drama which was originally to be called Der junge Siegfried (Young Siegfried). It will be followed by Part II dealing with the work originally called Siegfrieds Tod (Siegfrieds Death). Details of this event may be subject to change.
