Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (Il Gattopardo – 1963, 186 min.) recreates, with nostalgia, drama, and opulence, the tumultuous years of Italy’s Risorgimento—when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle classes rose and formed a unified, democratic Italy. Starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, and Claudia Cardinale.
This newly restored print is presented February 19 – 21 at the Castro Theatre in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and the Consulate General of Italy. A special screening will take place on Saturday, February 19 at 7:00 pm in honor of the 150-Year Anniversary of the Unification of Italy featuring introductory remarks by the Consul General of Italy Fabrizio Marcelli, and music from the Risorgimento performed on the historic Wurlitzer organ. (Other events will follow to celebrate this important milestone - programs for the Celebrations of the 150-Year Anniversary of the Unification of Italy will be distributed at the door.)
