The greatest living exponents of reggae music THE WAILERS, will be continuing their US tour and are heading to Glenside on Thursday, April 8. The tour comes hot on the heels of last year’s smash-hit “Exodus Tour” that saw the band playing the classic 1977 album in its entirety to sold-out venues in 20 countries across the world.
The Wailers will be using the tour to bring more attention to their “I Went Hungry” campaign (www.iwenthungry.org), which donates unused funds from the band’s daily hospitality riders, directly to the United Nations’ World Food Program. To date, the charity has already fed over 650,000 people since its inception last year.

Original member Aston “Familyman” Barrett, a revered innovator joined The Wailers in 1969, quickly becoming singer-songwriter Bob Marley’s right-hand man and musical director. On record and on stage, his inimitable style became an essential part of the Wailers’ sound. Following Marley’s death in 1981, “Fams” took the reins as the band’s leader, spearheading performances to adoring crowds the world over, as well as the band’s involvement with the fight against global hunger. “For decades The Wailers have been about spreading a positive message to our audience,” says Fams. “With the campaign, we want to spread that message beyond the audience – so even if these people can’t feel it musically, they will feel it spiritually. I can’t think of a better way to give thanks than giving back to the people.”

Formed in Jamaica in the late 1960s, The Wailers have gone on to become the most successful reggae band of all time, selling over 250 million albums, and playing live to an estimated 24 million people worldwide. Along with brother Carlton “Carlie” Barrett on drums, Familyman was the rock-steady and ever-ready rhythm section for Bob Marley and The Wailers. Familyman helped forge the template for reggae with his booming, thunderous bass patterns and ever-so-tight turns. But more than just a bass player, Family Man also played a large part in arranging Marley’s songs and co-produced a number of the late icon’s albums.
