January 7-9, 2011, the Latin Ballet of Virginia proudly presents its 10th Anniversary performance of THE LEGEND OF THE POINSETTIA. Latin Ballet’s Artistic Director, Ana Ines King, created the production in 2001 to delight and inform audiences on the numerous and unique winter holiday traditions from Latin America. Every year since, the Latin Ballet has captivated audiences of all ages and backgrounds with this annual performance full of light, spirit and joy. THE LEGEND OF THE POINSETTIA is a story based on the Mexican legend about a pure-hearted young girl who discovers the true spirit of giving. This story is as traditional in the Latin American holiday season as the Nutcracker is in the United States. Unable to offer a gift of material value, Little Maria picks a handful of weeds that magically transform into brilliant crimson flowers, and thus the custom of giving poinsettias during the holidays is born. The Latin Ballet’s production of THE LEGEND OF THE POINSETTIA elegantly portrays the traditions of the season in the countries of Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain and Puerto Rico. Dances and music will demonstrate cultural celebrations with aguinaldos, gaitas, parrandas, cumbias and rumbas. The spiritual reverence of the season is combined with the joy and laughter of the traditional festivities. Original cast members will join in the 10th Anniversary Celebration. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to meet cast members of the past and present!
