What: “The Legacies of Slavery and Sisterhood: The Life and Work of Harriet Jacobs” – the first American slave woman to write an autobiography. Special reading/guest appearance by Actress Ruby Dee.

Summary: Conference participants represent a “Who’s Who” of literary scholars and historians, many of whom are the nation’s foremost authorities on slavery. But slavery isn’t a thing of the Civil War past. To remind us of that fact, Mende Nazar, author of “Slave,” will recount her dramatic break for freedom after being seized from her Sudan home in 1993 by Arab raiders and sold into slavery at age 12.
