Henriette and Clitandre are in love, even more so now that Clitandre has given up wooing Henriette's sister, Armande. When Clitandre asks for permission to marry his new true love the men all seem reasonable enough, but the women of the house are far too busy entertaining poets and scholars to bother with anything so common as marrying for love. The battle of the wits gets more and more hysterical as zanier characters get added to the mix, but a conveniently timed letter sets everything straight, and all is made right by the time the curtain falls.
