BrainTree and the Theory of Everything is Anli Liu?s visual reflection on the myriad of images, information, and experiences that she has accumulated through her study of neurology. Here she appropriates the visual imagery of modern medicine?including biochemical maps, diagrams, and flowcharts?to create a series of landscape drawings and installations. Incorporating patient detail and working with the handicrafts of drawing and stitching, she subverts the detached and reductionist nature of scientific knowledge and transforms its symbol systems into a kind of personal landscape. Stylistically, Braintree hovers somewhere between the internal and external, masculine and feminine, reductionist and metaphysical, scientific and personal.
