Susan Kim's The Joy Luck Club, adapted from the Amy Tan novel, tells the story of four Chinese-immigrant mothers and their relationships with their American-born daughters. The play is made up of vignettes, which look deep into the Chinese pasts of the mothers and then shift back to the present day. The mothers share a sense of failure at being unable to connect with their daughters, and the sacrifices they made in order to come to America are played out like ghosts that come back to haunt them.
