In this talk by Mairi McLaughlin, Assistant Professor of French at UC Berkeley specializing in French and Italian linguistics, we will take a new look at a question that has been asked in Italy since the beginning of the fourteenth century: which variety of Italian should we use? Prof. McLaughlin will explore the history of this debate from its origins in Dante, through the sixteenth century to unification and beyond.
This talk is part of the 11th Annual Italian Language Week (October 17 – 21). This year, in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the theme is “Buon Compleanno Italia!”
