The Human Race, Dayton's own professional theatre company, presents the play where August Wilson's whole "Pittsburgh Cycle" begins. GEM OF THE OCEAN takes place in the first decade of the 20th century in that city's Hill District, an African-American neighborhood where slavery is still an all-too-recent memory. The famed playwright takes his characters and the audience through a magical and mystical journey, led by Aunt Ester, a 285-year old brought to America on the slave ship for which the play is named, who serves as the matriarch and moral light of the district.
