The Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra has been a staple of the Garage line-up for almost ten years. Williams and his 17 piece big band play every monday night for three hours, and have turned Garage into the busiest Monday night venue in the city.
Howard Williams is well known in the musical community, and has been in the scene for decades. He was active in the loft scene in the 50's and 60's, and recorded with such greats as Wilbur Harden, John Coltrane, Curtis Fuller, and Art Taylor. He work at Birdland on Broadway with Shorty Baker nad George Kelly. Later in the 60's Williams had a popular trio with Harry Leahy.
A talented arranger and composer, Williams is also a masterful pianist. He worked with the big bands of Woody Herman, Charlie Barnet, Hal McIntyre, and too many others to mention.
The Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra plays Howard's own arrangements and compositions, literally blowing guests out of their seats into standing ovations. Many of the members of his band have been playing with the group for the 10 years it has been at Garage. Such well-known artists as Lou Caputo and Virginia Mayhew represent the talent of the entire ensemble - consumate professionals.
Enjoy the Big Band sounds of the Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra. Vocalist Vicki Doney, who has soloed for both the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games and for Pope John Paul II, sings for many of the numbers.
