Stretching your dollars has certainly become more popular these days especially with the high gas prices. More people are learning how to be thrifty when it comes to shopping and the volunteers at The Haven's Resale Shop know this all too well.
The historic building which houses many of the gently used donated items like glassware and furniture has a unique charm that can only be found in Fairhope. The shop has been generating funds to help Baldwin County’s no-kill shelter since 2003. Thanks to the kindness of others, the shop quickly fills up with donations. In order to make room for more items, the volunteers host a yard sale twice a year. The public is invited to shop for a good cause at The Haven’s annual Spring yard sale on Saturday, May 21st, from 8am to 1pm. The Resale Shop is located at 357 Morphy Avenue in downtown Fairhope.
"We are grateful to the community for their generosity of donations and for the time the volunteers donate to keep the shop open," says Mike Graham, the Haven's Executive Director. “Funds generated from this event provide support for our adoption and foster programs which have helped over 300 homeless animals in the first quarter of 2011."
The dedicated volunteers who man the shop are a tight-knit team who feel very strongly on what the Haven Resale Shop does for The Haven. “We do it to help the animals,” says Nancy Langmaid who has managed the shop for almost 6 years. Since the Shop is manned solely by volunteers, all the profits, minus expenses, go entirely to take care of the Haven’s abandoned, abused, and neglected animals.
Because the Resale Shop is small, they don’t accept clothing, large items such as refrigerators, nor electronics, such as TVs, computers and printers. However, Nancy strongly suggests that if one is not sure, to call the Shop at 929-2911. “We’d love to get some real nice furniture,” said Nancy. “They generate a lot of money for us,” The volunteers pride themselves on the quality of products they offer to the public, such as china, small appliances, dishes, linens, framed pictures, decorative items, to name a view. The Resale Shop is considered an “upscale shop”, so it’s not a surprise when Nancy says they want nice, gently used items.
